Distinguish the difference between a speech to convince and a speech to actuate. Provide an example
of each.
What will be an ideal response?
A speech to convince focuses on audience beliefs and attitudes. I could present a speech trying
to convince my audience that the United States needs to develop more hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles.
In such a speech, I am trying to focus on my audience's beliefs and attitudes, without necessarily
presenting them with a course of action.
A speech to actuate attempts to change not only the listeners' beliefs and attitudes but also their behavior.
I could deliver the same topic above, but include a plan of action where I offer my audience some
examples of hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles that might move my audience to go out and purchase one.
