Three methods may be used to teach chains of behaviors. Name and briefly describe ONE
method. Be sure to include an example.
What will be an ideal response?
Students may describe any one of the following and provide an example:
1) Forward chaining – In forward chaining the student is taught to mastery the first step in the behavioral chain. Once the student demonstrates mastery of the first step of the behavioral chain the next step is taught to mastery until the student can successfully complete all steps in the behavioral chain.
2) Backward chaining – In backward chaining the student is taught to mastery the last step in the behavioral chain. Once the student demonstrates mastery of the last step of the behavioral chain the next to last step in the chain is taught to mastery with the first step in the chain being taught last. This process is continued until the student is able to complete all steps of the behavioral chain.
3) Total-task presentation – During total-task presentation all steps of the behavioral chain are taught simultaneously. As the student attempts the behavioral chain, the teacher is providing instruction on each step.
