Compare and contrast the phases of a Wilson Cycle. What types of rocks and tectonic structures

are distinctive of each phase? What will be an ideal response?

The student should recognize that a Wilson Cycle starts with a period of continental rifting,
followed by a period of ocean basin formation with passive margins along the boundaries of the
ocean basin. The last phase of the Wilson Cycle involves closure of the ocean basin with a final
orogenic period similar to that of the present-day Himalaya Mountains.
