The visual cliff experiment, which included a glass-covered table with a checkered pattern below the glass, was used to test depth perception in infancy. On half of the table, the checkered pattern was just below the surface whereas on the other half it was about 2 feet below, giving the appearance of a "visual cliff" in the middle of the table. Infants were tested to see whether they would crawl to the "shallow" side of the cliff and the "deep" side, when encouraged.
