Students should recall from the example of Arctic and red foxes in Chapter 22 that Arctic foxes face competition from the northward movement of red foxes, which is in part a response to increasing temperature. The discussion of Sceloporus in this chapter points out that mountains offer a closed-ended refuge: not only does a species moving upward to escape warming eventually reach the top of the mountain, but also most mountains narrow as one moves upward, so the available habitat decreases progressively. (There are, of course, additional problems with a rosy view of infinite space for displaced species to move into, but those two are discussed in the text.)
