What is the availability heuristic, and how might it affect our perception of violence?
What will be an ideal response?
Availability heuristic refers to cognitive shortcuts that people use to make conclusions about their world. With respect to violence, these cognitive shortcuts are often taken after being exposed to frequent and graphic violence presented in the media. One remembers the most frequently publicized and horrific accounts of violence, increasing one's fear and exaggerating the incidents of violence in their minds. As an example, repeated reports of a home invasion in a community may terrify people and lead them to believe this victimization will appen to them.
