What is an individualized educational program (IEP) and how does it differ from an individualized family service plan (IFSP)? Give an example of when you might use each.
What will be an ideal response?
The IEP is a document that outlines an educational plan for any child aged 3–21 who had an exceptionality. The IEP outlines a students’ current educational level, services to be provided, a time line for provisions, plans for initiating and delivering the services, and an assessment of its effectiveness. The IFSP, however, is geared toward infants and toddlers and their families. Similar to the IEP, the IFSP outlines an infant or toddler's present developmental levels (e.g., cognitive, physical, social or emotional), a statement of the family's priorities and concerns, expected outcomes, identification of specific early intervention services needed, projected dates, who would provide services, where services would be provided, and the steps necessary in delivery of services. Student examples will vary, but an example of when an IEP would be used is when a school-aged child is experiencing significant developmental delays in reading ability. An example of when an IFSP would be used, however, would be when a day-care facility identifies a developmental speech delay in a child younger than 3 years old.
