List and define the three intertwined attitudes that a client-centered therapist must demonstrate to a client.

What will be an ideal response?

(1) Unconditional positive regard: This is the therapist's attitude that expresses caring for and acceptance of the client as a valued person. It does not require the approval of all of the client's actions, but nonjudgmental acceptance of the client as an individual is key to the process of client-centered therapy.(2) Empathy: This refers to the therapist's attempt to appreciate how the world looks from the client's point of view. It is important for the therapist to express an understanding of this world view so that he or she can help the client make changes from that perspective. Empathy should not be confused with sympathy, which is roughly equivalent to the concept of pity.(3) Congruence: This refers to a consistency between the way therapists feel and the way they act toward clients. It is sometimes referred to as genuineness.
