What is the MHC and what is its function?

What will be an ideal response?

The MHC, or major histocompatibility complex, is a set of proteins that are on the outer surfaces of various cells involved in immunity. They are specific for each individual; indeed only an identical twin would have the same MHC that you have on your cells. MHC allows your cells to recognize "self" from "nonself." This is critical in the recognition of foreign cells. Unfortunately, these same proteins may be implicated in rejection of transplanted tissues and organs.
