Explain at least 3 principals of effective classroom discussions
What will be an ideal response?
Answers should include at least 3 of the following:
• Conducting a whole-class discussion is an art form, not unlike conducting an orchestra or playing in a jazz ensemble. But like conductors or musicians, teachers have to prepare and practice for class discussions.
• Talking enables students to construct new meanings, extend old ones, and make fresh connections between branches of knowledge and personal understandings.
• Students can develop listening and speaking skills while interacting over and learning the course content. Teachers who listen effectively serve as models to their students.
• Students can acquire and practice thinking strategies during conversations about concepts and ideas in the course curriculum. During discussions, teachers can guide students so that they learn to differentiate opinion from supporting evidence or provide explanatory bridges between opinions and reasons supporting an opinion.
• All students should become part of the conversation. To work toward that goal, teachers need to monitor patterns of participation among students and to diagnose possible causes for non-participation.
