How did Joan of Arc's story reflect the larger upheavals of the Middle Ages?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary, but Joan of Arc's story is characteristic of the turmoil of the Middle Ages in several aspects. First, she was a peasant in a time when peasant revolts were spreading in her native country of France. Students should be able to trace the significance of someone of her class transcending economic and social boundaries, eventually rising to lead an army. Second, Joan was a French-identified warrior in the Hundred Years' War, which was the defining conflict of the fourteenth century. Thirdly, Joan's refusal to dress in women's clothes, power on the battlefield, and uncompromising faith in herself and her cause was indicative of the larger issues that enveloped Europe in the Middle Ages. Finally, her execution as a witch is exemplary of the complex interactions between faith, superstition, and gender in the period.
