Identify and explain two ways that a family-centered approach can benefit both children with disabilities and their families.

What will be an ideal response?

A family-centered approach can benefit families in the following ways: (1) improved child functioning; (2) improvement in family competence, skills, confidence, and emotional well-being; (3) increased sense of control for families; (4) improved problem-solving skills; (5) increased likelihood that families can care for their own children; (6) cost-effectiveness tied to a family's ability to take on tasks that normally would have been covered by practitioners; and finally (7) family empowerment. Students may note that #2 is important because a family-centered approach helps families gain skills and confidence in working with their child and the delay or disability beyond the classroom setting. It also benefits the children directly when the family is involved in all aspects of the child’s learning and development. Students may also note that #3 and #4 are important because a family-centered approach places the family at the center of their child’s learning experiences and it gives families more control in the decision-making and problem-solving processes as it relates to their child’s learning and growth.
