This information allows us to understand the state of things, and have accurate descriptions related to specific compositions and behaviors. Explanatory surveys seek to find out why we see what we do. Instead of answering how many people do X, it would ask why people do X. We can use this type of survey to begin to understand what motivates certain behaviors or what values people hold.
