What are grade-equivalent scores? When should grade-equivalent scores be used?
What will be an ideal response?
A grade-equivalent score indicates a student's performance in relation to grade level and months of the school year, assuming a 10-month school year, to the norm group. Thus, a grade-equivalent score of 4.5 refers to fourth grade, fifth month in school. A grade equivalent of 6.0 stands for the beginning of the sixth grade. In some test reports, the decimal point is omitted so that 45 is the same as 4.5 and 60 is the same as 6.0. Grade-equivalent scores should be used only to interpret a student's progress, not for grade placement. Because grade-equivalent scores are often misleading and misinterpreted, other types of scores, such as standard scores, are more appropriate.
