Describe the important daily living skills that should be addressed in the IEP’s transition plan.
What will be an ideal response?
Preparation in life skills is critical to ensure that young adults with ASD are prepared for the transition to adulthood. Potential living arrangements include supervised group home living, adult foster care, supervised apartment living, and independent living. Other life skills include personal care, time management, and dealing with relationships. Additional skills include knowing how to speak on the telephone and access important numbers. How to clean and maintain a home, such as understanding how to use cleaning products and tools is also important to address. It is critical to understand how to manage one’s money, such as using a checking account, budgeting for weekly/monthly expenses, and knowing how credit cards work. We also want our students with ASD to know how to use public transportation appropriately for increased independence. Knowing how to utilize the bus schedule, or orientation to a map, or driving safety are also important considerations. Getting appropriate exercise, understanding nutrition, using cooking skills, keeping appointments and time management are important areas to address to increase a young adult’s independence and transition to adulthood.
