Linguistic determination, or the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, asserted that language dictates our ability to perceive and think. However, linguistic determinism is a pretty stark standpoint to take. Just because people don’t have an easy word for something doesn’t mean they can’t understand the concept using a longer phrase. Therefore, Whorf devised the theory of linguistic relativity, which takes the less extreme view that language influences our thinking but does not determine it.
