Answer: The six types of power discussed in the text are (1) legitimate, (2) referent, (3) reward, (4) coercive, (5) expert, and (6) information or persuasion power. You have legitimate power over another person when this person believes you have a right by virtue of your position (for example, you’re the appointed group leader) to influence or control his or her behavior. You have referent power over another person when that person wishes to be like you or identified with you. You have reward power over a person if you have the ability to give that person rewards—either material (money, promotions, jewelry) or social (love, friendship, respect). You have coercive power if you have the ability to remove rewards or to administer punishments. You possess expert power if group members regard you as having expertise or knowledge—whether or not you truly possess such expertise. You have information power, or persuasion power if you’re seen as someone who can communicate logically and persuasively.
