Former basketball player Shaquille O’Neal weighs approximately 335 lb and wears a size 23 shoe. Estimate the pressure he exerts on a floor. What pressure would he exert if his shoe size were 13? State all your assumptions, and show how you arrived at a reasonable solution.
What will be an ideal response?
The standard U.S. shoe sizes are shown in the accompanying table. Our footprints are not
rectangular in shape; however our foot print could be represented by approximately 85%
of total area (multiply the "heel to toe length" by "medium width").
Please note that since we are approximating the solution, we don't need to carry out our
calculations to two decimal points. Therefore, the answer is approximately 4 to 5 psi vs. 7
to 8 psi.
