What rock evidence leads geologists to conclude that much of Pangaea was an arid or semi-arid
environment? What will be an ideal response?
The extensive Permian red beds and evaporites found in western North America, central Europe,
and parts of Russia provide evidence for the dry conditions that existed in the interior part of the
Pangaea supercontinent. Arid conditions were caused because mountain ranges blocked much of
the moist, subtropical easterly winds, creating rain shadows.
