Broca's aphasia occurs from lesions in the anterior to the lower portion of the motor area in the brain. It is characterized by nonfluent speech and language but comprehension appears to be intact. Wernicke's aphasia occurs from lesions in the upper portion of the temporal lobe. It is characterized by fluent speech and difficulty with language comprehension. In global aphasia, most language areas are affected. Patients will use jargon and persevere, or repeat jargon or phrases multiple times. Anomic aphasia is a common type of language problem associated with neurological deficits. It is classified as fluent aphasia but the patient has difficulty recalling words and naming objects.
