Do you think that oppressive systems based on visible physical markers will ever be dismantled? Why or why not?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Students must be able to logically support their answer with concepts from the book. Students may state that oppressive systems based on visible physical markers will not be dismantled unless society can accomplish a process of re-socialization. Individuals have been socialized to understand that there are inherent differences between groups based on social constructs. For example, we are socialized to believe that there are social differences between men and women. Many of us grow up learning through social institutions that women are weak and submissive, while men are strong and authoritative. Even if we don't personally believe this, this is a concept that has become engrained in American society. It is likely that we intentionally (and even unintentionally) treat men and women differently in certain situations based on what society has told us to believe. Re-socialization would mean that society has completely changed its views on the differences between men and women. If a student chose to discuss re-socialization, they should be able to explain why they think it is or is NOT possible in our society.
