A person’s first exposure to an antigen/allergen does not produce an allergic response; this initial exposure is referred to as the sensitizing dose. After this dose, the body produces the IgE antibody, which only reacts to this particular antigen. The IgE antibody continues to be produced even when the antigen is no longer present in the body. Upon subsequent exposure to the same antigen, biochemical elements such as histamine are released, causing an allergic reaction.
