Describe the role of pet abuse as a result of IPV
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Many victims stay with the perpetrator because they cannot take their pets to shelters. Batterers who have assaulted or mutilated pets are more likely to kill their partner. It is done to serve as a threat that the victim would be next. Abusers harm animals to punish their partners for leaving or to keep them from leaving. In 2006, Maine became the first state to include protection of animals in domestic violence cases to help alleviate this issue.
