Explain why countries advocating individual human rights did not immediately abolish slavery.
What will be an ideal response?
At first, countries did not apply individual human rightsto all people. The Magna Carta specified the rights due to “freemen.” Obviously, not all people were equal under the law. Some were not free, as slavery existed almost everywhere in the world. Slaves were considered property to be bought and sold against their will, and those willing to be indentured servants could sell their services for an agreed-upon period of time. Many people, therefore, did not apply human rights to slaves.
