Describe the process of atmospheric corrosion, what causes the corrosion, and the most common form of atmospheric corrosion.
What will be an ideal response?
Construction materials are chemically degraded by the environment in which they are placed. This degradation is called atmospheric corrosion. The most common form of atmospheric corrosion is oxidation. Oxidation is the reaction of a material with the oxygen in the atmosphere, such as iron rusting. Other corrosive chemicals are present in the air, water, and soil to which materials are exposed, including sulfate ions in groundwater, soils, and seawater; sulfur dioxide gas in the air; and alkali in soils.
