Describe two of the four drawbacks in using manual motor starters rather than magnetic motor starters.
What will be an ideal response?
First, manual motor starters are not capable of remote control operation because the contacts are mechanically linked to the start and stop buttons, so the operator must control the motor from the starter location. Second, auxiliary control contacts are not provided to control auxiliary equipment, because manual motor starters cannot use them. Third, manual motor starters are limited to small, normally fractional horsepower motors, and it would be rare to find them controlling motors greater than 10 horsepower. Fourth, the switch contacts are a mechanical linkage function, and they will remain closed in the case of a power failure.
