A report issued by the Russian police stated that 150 criminal gangs control some 40,000 private and state-run companies within Russia and an estimated 80 percent of all Russian businesspeople pay protection money to gangsters, the amounts ranging

between 20 and 30 percent of gross revenues. How do they convince the business owners to pay them protection money?

Once the Russian organized crime group determines that a business is a success, six or so of its members dressed in business suits and carrying walkie-talkies visit it. The leader typically congratulates the owner for choosing to do business in Russia and for his or her newfound success. The owner will also be congratulated for doing business with the mob. In passing, a group member will mention that he knows the route that the businessperson's daughter takes to school. The rest is routine.
