Describe the differences and similarities between wood shingles and wood shakes.

What will be an ideal response?

?Wood shingles are made from decay resistant wood (red cedar, cypress and redwood), that is machine sawn, overlapped and nailed on a continuous or spaced roof deck. Wood shakes are split rather than sawn pieces of wood and have a much rougher face texture than wood shingles. Both are tapered and installed with their thicker end facing towards the bottom of the slope. Treated shingles are pressure impregnated with fire retardant chemicals that saturate into the wood cells. Building codes in many areas require that shingles and shakes be treated to achieve a class B rating. Shingles require a minimum slope of 3:12, and shakes a 4:12 slope to assure proper drainage.?
