The first area in which patients with right hemisphere damage have difficulty with is communication. The patient may have difficulties with idioms and making inferences. They also take fewer turns during conversation and tend to talk more about themselves. Another area is attention and perception. Deficits in attention will impact the ability to communicate. A common problem associated with RHD is left neglect. Patients may experience sensory neglect on the left side of the body. Some perceptual problems include difficulty perceiving letters or words and they may exhibit organizational problems while writing. The last area is cognition. Cognition includes a person's ability to sequence, reason, and solve problems. People with RHD may experience difficulties with cognition.
