Define a plea bargain and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a plea bargain.

What will be an ideal response?

A plea bargain is a negotiated agreement among the defendant, the prosecutor, and the court where certain charges against the defendant are either reduced or dropped or the defendant receives a certain type of sentence. Advantages—reduces court congestion and makes a speedy trial possible. It reduces the burden of the victim in going to court for testimony, and it assures the conviction of the defendant. Disadvantages—victims feel an injustice in knowing the charges have been changed against them in the crime that has been committed.
