What are quickwrites, and how are they used in teaching literacy? How can struggling students use them?

What will be an ideal response?

Quickwrites are first drafts written after reading a short piece of literature, a poem or essay, or a prompt. They can also be used as reactions to concepts learned in a content area, to summarize a lesson, or to respond to a concept. Their purpose is to get ideas down on paper rapidly, almost a form of brainstorming on paper. They also act as a unique form of writing practice within a timed framework, training students to write quickly and frequently, then expanding to more polished writing. Students who have difficulty responding with words can use stick figures to represent their response in describing an event or tell a story. Then they can add words. This can be a very effective modification of the quickwrite process.
