What are the dietary recommendations for an individual who has experienced significant unanticipated weight loss as a result of a medical condition such as AIDS or cancer?

What will be an ideal response?

In individuals who are experiencing unanticipated weight loss, or cachexia, as a result of a medical condition, the goal is to enhance the patient's quality of life and improve chances for survival by increasing appetite and overall food intake. Weight gain is not necessarily possible in this population, and therefore minimizing further weight loss is the primary goal. Dietary suggestions include small, frequent meals high in protein and calories and may include high levels of sugar and fat. Foods such as whole milk, ice cream, cheese, butter, cream, gravy and sour cream may be encouraged to increase overall calorie intake. Although oral health and cariogenicity remains an important consideration, it is not as important as maintaining weight. Therefore, the dental team should not contradict the recommendation for small frequent meals or high sugar diets. The dental professional should instead encourage increased oral self-care and other caries management strategies.
