List and describe parts of the root tip
What will be an ideal response?
At the very end of every root is the root cap. These cells are sloughed off as the root grows through the soil. These cells also produce copious mucus that aids the plant in pushing through the soil. An apical meristem is just above the root cap, and is the source of new cells for the root cap. On the upper side of the meristem are cells that elongate, and differentiate into specialized cells of the root: dermal, ground, and vascular tissues. Students are often familiar with the cells of the root tip, as they are commonly used to demonstrate mitosis, as cells here are rapidly undergoing cell division.
