What is a supercontinent? Identify the supercontinents of the Proterozoic. Discuss their history What will be an ideal response?
A supercontinent consists of at least two continents merged into one, and we usually refer to
a supercontinent as a one composed of all or most of Earth’s landmasses. Two
supercontinents existed in the Proterozoic: Rodinia assembled between 1.3 and 1.0 billion
years ago, and fragmented 750 million years ago. The continents reassembled 650 million
years ago into another supercontinent, Pannotia. This began fragmenting 550 million years
ago, near the end of the Proterozoic.
