In the spreadsheet, identify each of the food items purchased in one column. Perhaps list food items by category (e.g., fruits and vegetables, grains, meats and poultry, dairy). In another column, list the costs for each of the items. Set up formulas in the spreadsheet to calculate the costs of each of the foods and each of the categories. Students may want to look at the caloric content, fat content of each food group. Students should then decide if certain foods can be substituted for others and still provide a nutritious diet.
