Explain how PBS relates to ABA. What are the similarities and differences?
What will be an ideal response?
We can think of PBS as an approach that has “evolved” from ABA or is an “extension” of ABA. PBS is emerged from ABA principles, which offers interventions that are much like ABA but do not require the level of formal training and certification as ABA.
• ABA is highly technical while PBS is less technical.
• ABA is a science devoted to the understanding and improvement of human behavior, guided by the attitudes and methods of scientific inquiry, and should be administered only by formally trained behavior therapists over a long period of time while PBS is usually implemented by certified professionals who have had a considerable amount of formal training
• ABA involves intensive approaches designed to teach new skills and eliminate problem behaviors while PBS offers the structure with which we can modify the environment to prevent problem behavior and maximize positive behavior outcomes.
• Unlike ABA, PBS does not have a sole and discrete focus of remediating a student’s inappropriate behavior in a clinical setting through the expertise of a clinician using a functional analysis.Rather, PBS emphasizes a lifestyle focus in natural settings implemented by teachers, families, and perhaps others, using an array of assessment and support procedures
