. Discuss how coercive organizations are total institutions.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Varies. Within coercive organizations, people are forced to obey authority figures as well as strict rules, which are reinforced by the authority. Individuals are forced or threated by force and must unquestionably comply with all rules and regulations. These same characteristics are present to total institutions, where people are forced to give unquestioned obedience to authority. Example of this type of organization and institution are prisons, where people are constantly monitored by guards, have locked doors, barred windows, and cannot voluntarily leave the facility. Mention how individual’s behavior and thinking can change while in coercive organization or total institutions.
