How are Marxist theory and world systems theory similar and different?
What will be an ideal response?
Both Marxist theory and world systems theory use the idea of the unequal exchange between the classes and apply it to the international system. As a result, both believe that polical events, including wars between states, are driven by capitalisticgroups striving for more wealth by taking advantage of less-powerful groups. Also, both theories minimize the importance of state boundaries and emphasize the economic ties between nations as being more important. In addition, both the Marxist theory and the world systems theory make bold predictions about the downfall of capitalism.
However, the Marxist theory claims that a universal capitalist class rules the world. The world systems theory rejects this idea and instead claims that each state acts according to its position in the economic system. This system is divided into three zones: core, semi-periphery, and periphery. The core states have the strongest economies and governments, and thus they exert the most influence in the world. The semi-periphery states have fairly strong economies and governments, but they don’t have as much influence as the core states. The periphery countries have the weakest economics and government and thus are exploited by the core and semi-periphery states.
