When a therapist beings work with a client, the therapist’s theoretical orientation can help him or her look beneath the surface of the client’s presenting problem to understand the dynamics underlying the client’s concerns. Theory suggests potential goals for therapy, interventions that can be effective in achieving those goals, and information about the advantages and disadvantages of each therapeutic alternative. It is the theoretical orientation that allows the clinician to work in an organized and strategic manner over the course of therapy.
