America was formed originally as a limited democracy. Only white men of property could vote. Slaves counted as 3/5th s of a person and Native Americans did not count at all. What do you think our forefathers were basing these decisions of how
America’s democracy was formed? In modern society today, in what groups is the majority of power still held and why and what groups are still disenfranchised lack equality and power? Give examples and several ideas that could help facilitate change.
What will be an ideal response?
White men had held power in England and the structure of society was paternalistic. The men typically in power were elite and elite individuals typically work to protect their wealth. The structure for much of this period supported maintaining power and justification for treating other groups with gross inequality. For the second part of this question, it is important to look at which party has more power, their priorities and legislative behavior and who it benefits. Some basic ways to assess equality is to look at poverty rates, incarceration statics and who is utilizing social welfare programs.
