Why does the sun and moon both appear to be higher than they really are along the horizon?
Light rays from the lower part of the sun (or moon) are bent more than those from the upper part, the sun and moon both appear to be higher than they are causing both to rise about two minutes earlier and set about two minutes later than they would if there were no atmosphere.
