Classical liberalism is the basis of conservative thinking. Neoliberalism was a reinstatement of many of these principles. They sought to reduce social benefits and deregulate industry. These policies were punitive to the needy and these policies did not prove to support that democratic approaches were job killers. The Great Recession as largely the result of neoliberal policies.
