While the twists and turns of evolution probably make fate part of the answer, the exoskeleton
provides some explanation as well. In the water, crustaceans would experience buoyancy, allowing
them to grow large and still move their exoskeleton-encased body. On the land insects would feel the
full weight of the exoskeleton and therefore be obligated to stay small.
