The dental team should be aware that problems in the oral cavity can affect nutritional status as well as understanding that diet can affect oral health. Therefore, it is important for the dental team to conduct dietary risk assessment, provide individualized education, and initiate referral to the appropriate healthcare providers (physician, registered dietitian) when appropriate. According to the ADA and the ADHA, members of the dental team should:
- Maintain current knowledge of national dietary guidelines. ?
- Effectively educate and counsel patients about proper nutrition and oral health, to promote overall healthy eating and wellness. ?
- Work with school officials to ensure school food services, including vending services and school stores, provide nutritious food and beverage options. ?
- Oppose targeting children in the promotion and advertisement of foods low in nutritional value and high in cariogenic carbohydrates. ?
- Work collaboratively with other health professionals to prevent obesity. ?
