Property acquired by gift or inheritance is considered separate property. Property owned jointly by married persons and generally includes property acquired during marriage is known as community property. Community property commonly includes wages, anything purchased with wages, and pension plans. It also includes debts. This property is equally divided during the property settlement phase of a divorce action. Community property is recognized only in the "community property" states.
