The core region of the modern world-system first emerged in northwestern Europe and
now includes the United States, Canada, Japan, and other similarly industrialized nationstates.
Together this “area” controls a vast majority of the world’s wealth while producing
a highly skilled workforce that is controlled through wage payment. Using its economic and
political superiority, the core is able to dominate and control the periphery. Students should offer feedback that includes economic solutions, discuss the power dynamic involved, or offer alternative paradigms for cultural identity and relationships.
