What are the components of effective listening? What are the positive outcomes of effective listening for us, as individuals, and for society?
What will be an ideal response?
The ideal answer would include:
1. Empathetic listening allows the listener to better understand the needs and feelings of others. This is key to treating others with respect and working together to solve problems. Empathetic listening is a crucial aspect of living in a democracy, as we are required to work together.
2. Informational listening allows the listener to expand their knowledge of the topic at hand. This is an important part of becoming a more informed person and making more informed decisions. It helps students do better in class, and helps citizens become more informed voters. It is also the first step to critical listening.
3. Critical listening allows the listener to analyze and make judgments about a speaker's message. Critical listening is the foundation of being able to judge the relevancy, accuracy, timeliness and validity of a speaker's message. A democracy needs critical listening in order to ascertain the best solution to the problems presented, and to keep society safe from demagoguery.
4. Effective listening is an important aspect of understanding the value system you hold and the value systems of those around you. By applying empathetic, informational and critical listening, an effective listener can compare their value system to the value systems around them. This is a benefit to society in that it increases our awareness of different value systems and increases our self-awareness of the experiences, beliefs, and attitudes that have shaped our own value system.
