Describe why water management is a critical issue facing fuel cells.
What will be an ideal response?
Water management is one of the most important issues facing fuel cells because water is critical to fuel cells. In some systems like SPFC (PEM), the cells will not operate without water nor will they operate with too much water. Water must be available in the correct amount, not only as liquid, but also in the gases present within the cell. Water is needed in reforming the input fuels. Water is used to cool cells. Water holds the protons in PAFC cells and the hydroxide ions in AFC cells. The operations of fuel cells depend to a great extent on the systems that ensure the timely and correct availability of water.
