Explain the relationship between equilibrium theory and proxemics
What will be an ideal response?
Equilibrium theory states that the more intimate the relationship, the closer you allow the
person into your personal space. Thus, an observer could easily make assumptions about the
closeness of two people based on how present they are in each other's personal space. If I
observe two people at a coffee shop, sitting close, heads huddled together, I can presume they
are fairly intimate. Conversely, two people standing in line at a coffee shop, keeping a
respectable distance from each other, are most likely either strangers or acquaintances.
