What were the problems faced by previous studies on understanding mothers and how did the Saatchi/Mumsnet study seek to improve on them?
What will be an ideal response?
This question illustrates the challenge that companies, such as Saatchi and Mumsnet may be
faced with to try and understand better the perceptions and motivations of target groups such
as mothers. Such challenges were prompted not only by the lack of access of some earlier
studies to personal dimensions (such as acknowledging borrowing from a bank) but also by
the irrelevance, to the majority of mothers, of the adverts provided in the past. New ways had
to be found to increase the understanding and accuracy of their representation. Past studies
are routinely criticized for either not being rich enough with the produced information or
providing a context that enables questionnees to express themselves more freely. Hence it is
of paramount importance that market researchers continuously question whether their data
gathering tools and analysis are suited to represent as many as possible of the target group
members.
